A Nêhiyaw (Cree) Nation of Treaty 6, carrying forward the legacy of Papaway while staying connected wherever our members live
Name and Treaty: Lucky Man Cree Nation, ᐸᐯᐍ papêwê in Cree, is named for Papaway, whose name means lucky man. Papaway signed on to Treaty 6 at Fort Walsh in 1879. In 1884 he asked for a reserve next to Poundmaker, Little Pine and Big Bear, but the federal government refused. Descendants reorganized in 1976 and filed for treaty land entitlement under the leadership of Chief Rod King, and reserve land was awarded in 1989.
Population: Lucky Man had a registered population of 112 in 2022, the smallest membership in Treaty 6. In 2019, 109 of 115 members lived off reserve, which makes staying connected especially important.
Location: Our reserve covers 12 sections, or 3,078.6 ha, in the Thickwood Hills, about 60 km east of North Battleford, Saskatchewan. We are a member of the Battlefords Tribal Council, with offices in North Battleford and Saskatoon.
Culture: Revitalization of language and culture is among the priorities named in the Nation's discussions with Canada. Our leaders have also explored economic opportunities, including bison and elk farming and an eco-tourism facility.
